What’s Changing In Flooring Trends For 2022?

Tastes and technology constantly change and these changes create a never-ending river of trends in everything from clothing to hairstyles to wood floors. So what’s new for 2022 when it comes to wood flooring? “The general feeling in 2022 is that no one is satisfied with traditional materials anymore,” says Indecortrends.com. “Homeowners want flooring materials that have received special treatment to be unique in design and texture. Whether it’s smoked wood, bleached floors, textured tile, or wood-look tile, buyers are looking for new and exciting options.” Our research tells us that natural, lighter, and softer are three words that could sum up the direction of the wood flooring for the coming year. Here are some flooring trends you should expect to see in 2022:

1. Wider and Longer Planks

Wide planks came in vogue a few years ago and the trend is going strong. Expect to be able to find them from many manufacturers. Planks from 8” up to 20” are considered wide planks and they are popular because they can make a room look bigger and more open because there are fewer seams so the floor looks less busy. To complement the wider planks, longer planks are also gaining in popularity featuring boards up to 12 feet. Combining longer and wider planks creates even fewer seams for a smoother, less interrupted look.

2. Patterns

Parquet flooring (flooring composed of smaller pieces arranged in geometric patterns) is gaining popularity. Because there are many options for design, including chevron and herringbone patterns, it’s easy to create a unique look. Parquet floors give a modern and upscale look to any space. They are perfect for entryways or living areas because they really make a statement.

3. Rustic Textures

Rustic textures like hand-scraped, wire-brushed, and distressed planks are also trending. From hand-scraped planks that are lightly brushed to remove the soft fibers between the harder grains for a finish that highlights the wood’s texture, to distressed planks that feature scrapes and dents hinting at a previous life, these textures really add personality to a room. Mineral streaks and knots in the wood are also welcomed and create a more natural feel.

4. Lighter Colors

When it comes to color, things are trending even lighter in 2022. We’ve moved from natural colors and greys in 2021 to even lighter greys, beiges, whites, and an interesting new combination called greige (a marriage of grey and beige). You’ll even see natural floors which have the look of unfinished wood. Red and yellow tones are out. Designer tip – stick to the one color palette throughout your home to create visual continuity.

5. Matte Finishes

Satin and glossy finishes are out. They’ve been replaced by matte and lower sheen coatings. These finishes have a more natural look (surprise, surprise) and have the added advantage of hiding dust and imperfections better.

6. Faux Flooring

2021 saw a huge jump in popularity with faux flooring. Luxury vinyl that mimics wood, and tiles that look like wood can be found everywhere. Faux wood flooring is durable, affordable, and many varieties are waterproof as well. These materials provide the look of wood at a lower price point.
