Exclusive SVB 5-Step Unfinished Hardwood Floor Installation Process
From initial design consultation to final clean-up, we take steps to ensure the best possible final results. There are no shortcuts, no cut corners. Your hardwood floor is a premium feature that adds value to your home, and we treat it as such.
1. Free In-Home Design Consultation & Estimate
flooring installation begins with your vision. We can help bring it to life by recommending products, colors and finishes that will best fit your decor, lifestyle, personality and budget. We understand that hardwood flooring is an investment and will never pressure you to make a decision or fail to answer your questions. We want you to be comfortable with the process and love the results.
Once you have decided on the flooring options you would like, we will send you a detailed estimate so you know exactly what your new hardwood floor will cost. When you accept, we will schedule your installation. Before the installation, you will need to remove furniture and wall hangings from the room(s).
2. Sub-Floor Preparation
Your new hardwood floor installation is only as good as the sub-floor beneath. We walk the floor to find squeaks, low spots and uneven seams, then fix them by tightening from below and sanding planks to an even plane.
3. Dustless Sanding
The unfinished hardwood planks must be sanded to accept the stain. We use the state-of-the-art Bona Atomic Dust Containment System® (DCS), which extracts the sanding dust into a sealed tube and carries it to our trailer outside. There’s no dust in your ductwork and no dust to ruin a perfect finish. Learn more about dustless sanding here.
4. Custom Hardwood Staining
We can create the exact color you choose with our custom color process. We test it on your floor so you can see it. Once you are happy with the color, we apply the stain to the floor and install a replacement base shoe.
5. Three-Coat Finish
Last but not least, we finish your new hardwood floor with three coats of an environmentally safe, durable and fast-drying topcoat. You can choose from several different finish options ranging from low luster to high gloss.
Why three coats? The first coat seals the hardwood, while the second and third build thickness for years of durability against normal wear and tear. We also screen, buff and vacuum between coats for the absolute best results.

FAQ
Can you do an inlay, border, or parquet design for my new hardwood floor?
Absolutely. We can incorporate a manufacturer-produced inlay into your hardwood floor installation, lay down a pattern, or even create something completely one-of-a-kind. We love doing custom work. See the Custom Hardwood Floors page for information or give us a call.
I have an idea of what I’d like but I’m not sure what will work best in my home. Can you help me?
It would be our pleasure. Every new flooring project begins with a free in-home design consultation. You can bring us any ideas or inspiration you have, and we’ll provide expert recommendations to meet them.
Let’s create your next flooring experience together and tell the story of how we were able to develop the perfect color, character, texture and cut that you had envisioned for your home.
Should I choose unfinished hardwood flooring or prefinished hardwood flooring?
Both are superb options with their own advantages and best use cases.
If you want to match existing flooring or wood elements in your home, unfinished hardwood flooring will allow you to do that with a custom stain. The unfinished hardwood floor installation process itself also offers advantages. The protective finish applied after staining penetrates and seals the seams between the planks, helping prevent water intrusion.
Prefinished hardwood flooring comes already sanded and stained, ready to install. This makes the entire installation process much faster—SVB can install a prefinished wood floor in just one to two days. The floor can be walked on immediately since there’s no drying time.
When choosing between unfinished hardwood flooring and prefinished, it’s really a matter of which product best meets your individual needs. We’ll review your flooring options during your free in-home design consultation.
