sanding-floors-imageWhen it’s time to refinish your hardwood floors, there are lots of choices to make. Is it time to redo the whole floor, or just a couple of rooms? What kind of stain or seal will you use? What color should you pick? While we’re eager to help you with these design questions, at SVB Wood Floors, we’re also going to make sure the process of refinishing your floor is as safe as possible. When you get to the question, “Why should I use a ‘dustless sanding’ system?” we’ve got answers.

Indoor Air Quality

Indoor air quality is the condition of the air within and around a building. Oftentimes, we think of pollution as a problem affecting the world outside our home, but our homes can collect dangerous air pollutants we can’t see, especially during construction projects. The Environmental Protection Agency considers poor indoor air quality one of the top five environmental threats to human health. Poor indoor air quality might be felt immediately, with symptoms like itchy, irritated eyes, headaches, or dizziness, or may trigger long-term problems such as asthma, developmental problems, or cancer.

Indoor Air and Refinished Wood Floors

Traditionally, when a home’s floors are refinished, a technician begins by sanding the floors. As the top layer is sanded away, it becomes dust that fills the air of the home. Everything in the house must either be covered or removed to escape the dust. All vents and ducts must be carefully sealed to prevent dust from collecting, and then spreading through the house again when the air is turned on. Sanding and cleaning may take anywhere between a day to a week, depending on the square footage. Even after the project is finished, it is common for homeowners to be cleaning up lingering dust for months afterward.

How a Dust Extraction System Works

When SVB Wood Floors refinishes a floor, we use a system to sand that actually removes the dust from your home immediately. Where other sanders kick dust into the air, that must be later cleaned up and removed, our dust containment system pulls all the dust out of your home and straight into the containment unit in our truck outside. Homeowners don’t have to worry about closing off the rooms to be worked on, covering other rooms and furniture, or staying out of the home. The dust is never loose in your home, which makes the process much cleaner, faster, and safer for everyone involved.

Because we use the Bona Atomic Dust Containment System, we actually contain 99.8% of the dust traditional sanding methods create. Learn more about the different kinds of ‘dustless’ sanding.
